ΚΑΡΣΙ/ KARSI ProJect

From June 11 to 16, we came together in İzmir as part of our ongoing collaboration between Caravan Project, Maquis Projects and CARR, for the second phase of Karşı:
Gatherings Across the North Aegean. Throughout the week, we met with local initiatives, walked through the neighborhood, exchanged practices and perspectives, and shared meals and conversations shaped by place.
We began with a screening of That Day by the Caravan Project for Darağaç Film Festival in (DAFF) at AudioDar, and later gathered at Darağaç Kitchen for a public event featuring a presentation by the CARR team. One of the outcomes of the visit was a neighborhood sculpture, created by Stradis and Petros from fragments and memories collected during the walk; a gift to the community of Darağaç.

In Izmir, we organized three interconnected events in collaboration with the community of Daraç. To walk here is to reclaim the city as a commons, a shared sensorium, a terrain of encounter and care. It means moving without barriers, tracing paths of memory and possibility. As we walked, we will collectively created a living map—tracing our movements, impressions, and encounters. Along the way, we gathered fragments of experience, memory, and perception, composing a shared narrative of place through bodies, steps, and gestures. Through this gathering, we exchanged experiences and reflect on the values that guide our practice—situated knowledge, embodied presence, and collective processes of sense-making.
In the face of enclosure, walking insists on permeability. It conjures absent presences, carries diasporic echoes, and lets us hear what the built environment tries to silence. As Fred Moten and Stefano Harney write, this is a “fugitive rehearsal”—not towards spectacle, but towards shared opacity, towards inhabiting the cracks in dominant narratives.

Part of the programme Καρσί / Karşı: Gatherings Across the North Aegean.
Partners: Anadolu Kültür (Tr), NOUCMAS (Gr), and TAVROS (Gr).
